💡 Daily Travel Tip

Upon arrival, it is highly recommended to get a local SIM card or have a VPN (Virtual Private Network) installed on your phone if you wish to access Western social media and Google services, which are blocked in China. WeChat and Alipay are the dominant payment methods, so setting one of these up and linking your credit card beforehand can be very useful. However, cash is still accepted. The Airport Express train is a fast and efficient way to get into the city. From there, the Beijing Subway is excellent for navigating the sprawling city. Have your hotel’s address written down in Chinese characters to show to taxi drivers, as English is not widely spoken by them. A translation app can also be invaluable for communication.

👕 What to Wear

Your attire for arriving in Beijing should be comfortable for the long flight. Once in the city, the season will dictate your wardrobe. In summer (June-Aug), Beijing is hot and humid, so lightweight and breathable clothing like cotton dresses, shorts, and t-shirts are best. In spring (Apr-May) and autumn (Sept-Oct), the weather is pleasant, but layers are key. A light jacket or sweater will be needed for the cooler evenings. Winter (Nov-Mar) is cold and dry, requiring a warm winter coat, hat, gloves, and thermal layers. For your first day of exploring, comfortable walking shoes are non-negotiable, as you will be on your feet navigating the hutongs and streets. The overall style in Beijing is practical and modern, so comfortable, casual attire is perfectly acceptable.

🍲 Where to Eat

For your first dinner in Beijing, you are in for a treat. The city is a culinary capital. A fantastic way to start is by trying some authentic Beijing Zha Jiang Mian (noodles with fried bean sauce), a hearty and delicious local staple. The hutong areas around Houhai Lake have many small, family-run restaurants serving this and other traditional dishes. For a more adventurous culinary experience, the Donghuamen Night Market on Wangfujing Street offers a variety of exotic street food on skewers, including scorpions and starfish, alongside more standard fare like lamb kebabs. Or, for a more relaxed sit-down meal, there are numerous restaurants on Wangfujing serving everything from traditional Beijing cuisine to food from other regions of China. It’s a great introduction to the country’s diverse and delicious food culture.

🚌 How to Go

From Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK), the Airport Express train is the most efficient way to reach the city centre. It connects to the city’s subway system at Sanyuanqiao (Line 10) and Dongzhimen (Line 2) stations. Taxis are also readily available; make sure to use the official taxi queue and insist on using the meter. Once in the city, the Beijing Subway is the best way to get around. It is extensive, modern, clean, and has signs and announcements in English. For your first day’s activities, you can take the subway to a station near Houhai Lake, like Shichahai station. The hutongs are best explored on foot or by a traditional rickshaw. To get to Wangfujing, you can take the subway to Wangfujing station on Line 1. Using the subway is a fast and affordable way to navigate this vast metropolis.

Surrounded by monumental buildings like the Great Hall of the People and the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall, you can feel the weight of modern Chinese history. From the square, you will pass under the iconic portrait of Chairman Mao and through the Tiananmen Gate to enter the legendary Forbidden City. This sprawling UNESCO World Heritage site was the imperial palace for 24 emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties. For 500 years, it was closed to the common people. Spend several hours wandering through its vast courtyards, magnificent halls, and intimate living quarters, marveling at the intricate architecture and the treasures on display. It’s a day of awe-inspiring scale and profound history.

  • Young Travelers: After visiting the Forbidden City, explore the nearby National Centre for the Performing Arts (the “Giant Egg”), a stunning piece of modern architecture.

🏨 Hotel Recommendations
💡 Daily Travel Tip

It is now mandatory to book your tickets for the Forbidden City online in advance, as they have a daily visitor cap and tickets sell out. You will need your passport number to book. A private guide can handle this for you. The complex is enormous, so wear your most comfortable walking shoes and be prepared for a lot of walking. The visit is one-way, entering from the south (Tiananmen Gate) and exiting from the north (Gate of Divine Might). Jingshan Park is directly opposite the north exit and is the perfect place to go afterwards for that iconic photo of the entire palace complex. Allow at least 4-5 hours for a decent exploration of the Forbidden City. An audio guide is highly recommended to understand what you are seeing.

👕 What to Wear

For a full day exploring Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, comfortable and practical clothing is essential. You will be on your feet for many hours, so the most important item is a pair of very comfortable walking shoes. Depending on the season, dress in layers. In summer, lightweight and breathable clothes are a must. A sun hat and sunglasses are crucial for protection, as there is very little shade in the vast courtyards. In the cooler months, a warm jacket is necessary. While there is no strict dress code, these are important cultural sites, so respectful, casual attire is appropriate. A backpack is useful for carrying water, snacks, and your camera, but be prepared for security checks upon entering Tiananmen Square.

🍲 Where to Eat

There are limited food options inside the Forbidden City, mainly consisting of small cafes with basic snacks and drinks. It’s a good idea to eat a hearty breakfast before you go and perhaps bring a snack with you. After exiting from the north gate, the area around Jingshan Park and the nearby hutongs offer many options for a late lunch. You can find numerous small, local restaurants serving delicious and affordable Beijing cuisine. For your evening meal, you have the entire city at your disposal. This is the perfect night to indulge in the most famous of all Beijing dishes: Peking Duck. Find a renowned restaurant like Dadong or Quanjude (book in advance) for an unforgettable dining experience where the chef carves the crispy, succulent duck at your table.

🚌 How to Go

The best way to get to Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City is by using the Beijing Subway. The closest stations are Tiananmen East or Tiananmen West on Line 1. From there, you will go through a security check to enter the square. The entrance to the Forbidden City is at the northern end of the square, through the Tiananmen Gate (Gate of Heavenly Peace). The visit through the palace is a one-way route from south to north. After you exit from the north gate, you can easily walk across the road to Jingshan Park. From there, you can take a local bus or a taxi/Didi (China’s ride-hailing app) back to your hotel or to a restaurant for dinner. This straightforward route is easy to navigate and very efficient.

Day 3: The Great Wall & Ming Tombs

Theme: A Journey to a Wonder of the World

Today is a day for a true bucket-list experience: a visit to the Great Wall of China. This monumental structure, winding its way across the rugged, mountainous landscape north of Beijing, is a testament to centuries of human endeavor. Your day trip will take you to one of the restored sections of the wall. The Mutianyu section is an excellent choice, known for its well-preserved watchtowers and stunning scenery, and it tends to be less crowded than other sections. You can take a cable car or chairlift up to the wall and then spend a few hours walking along its ramparts, taking in the breathtaking views as the wall snakes over the green mountains. For a fun descent, you can even take a toboggan slide down! Many tours also include a visit to the nearby Ming Tombs, the vast burial complex of 13 of the Ming Dynasty emperors, offering another glimpse into China’s imperial past.

📍 Local Tour Activities

  • Take a full-day trip to the Great Wall at Mutianyu.
  • Ride the cable car or chairlift up to the wall.
  • Walk along a section of the wall, exploring its watchtowers.
  • Enjoy the thrilling toboggan slide down from the wall.
  • Visit the Ming Tombs (Shisanling) and walk the Sacred Way.
Traveler Options
  • Young Travelers: The toboggan ride down from Mutianyu is a huge thrill. For a bigger challenge, consider a hike on an unrestored “wild” section of the wall like Jiankou (with a guide).
  • Seniors: The cable car at Mutianyu is enclosed and very comfortable. You can walk a flat section of the wall between watchtowers to enjoy the views without too many stairs.
  • Family: The combination of the cable car, the vast wall, and the fun toboggan slide makes Mutianyu the perfect section for a family day out.
  • With Disability: The Mutianyu section is the most accessible. The cable car can accommodate wheelchairs, and there are flat pathways at the top allowing for views along the wall.
Travel Style Options
  • Luxury Travel: Book a private car and guide for the day. Arrange a gourmet picnic to be enjoyed in a scenic spot with views of the wall.
  • Adventure: A guided hike from the unrestored Jiankou section to the restored Mutianyu section is a challenging but incredibly rewarding adventure for experienced hikers.
  • Nature: The Great Wall is not just a historical monument but also a journey through a beautiful natural landscape of rugged mountains and forests.
🏨 Hotel Recommendations
💡 Daily Travel Tip

The Great Wall is located a couple of hours’ drive from Beijing. The most hassle-free way to visit is by joining a guided bus tour or by hiring a private car and driver for the day. This avoids the complexities of public transport. An early start is highly recommended to beat the worst of the crowds and the traffic. Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes with a good grip, as the wall has steep sections and uneven steps. The sun can be very strong on the wall, so a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are essential. Bring plenty of water. The Mutianyu section offers a cable car and a chairlift up, and a toboggan or chairlift down, which are great fun and save you a strenuous climb. This will likely be a long and tiring but absolutely unforgettable day.

👕 What to Wear

Dressing for the Great Wall requires practical and comfortable clothing suited for a day of hiking and weather changes. Sturdy, comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots with good grip are the most important item. The wall can be steep and uneven, so proper footwear is crucial for safety and comfort. Wear layers. A breathable t-shirt as a base, with a fleece or sweater and a windproof/waterproof jacket on top is the best strategy. The weather in the mountains can be very different from Beijing—windier and cooler. In summer, wear lightweight trousers or shorts, but still bring a jacket. In the cooler months, warm layers are essential. A sun hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are must-haves year-round. A small backpack to carry your layers, water, and snacks is also a very good idea.

🍲 Where to Eat

Most guided tours to the Great Wall will include a simple Chinese lunch at a restaurant near the wall. These are typically set-menu meals designed for tourist groups. If you are traveling independently, there are several restaurants at the base of the Mutianyu section serving decent local food. For a more authentic experience, you could ask your private driver to stop at a restaurant in a nearby town on the way back to Beijing. Or, for the ultimate flexibility, you could pack a picnic to enjoy at a scenic spot. After a long day of hiking, you will return to Beijing for dinner. You could have a relaxed meal near your hotel or venture out to try a different regional Chinese cuisine, such as spicy Sichuan food or delicate Cantonese dim sum.

🚌 How to Go

The most convenient and highly recommended way to visit the Great Wall at Mutianyu is by hiring a private car and driver for the day or joining a small group bus tour. This can be easily arranged through your hotel or a travel agency in Beijing. This option takes about 1.5-2 hours and gives you the most flexibility. While it is possible to get there by public transport, it is a more complicated and time-consuming process involving a bus from Dongzhimen bus station. For a stress-free and efficient day trip that often combines the wall with the Ming Tombs, a pre-booked tour or a private car is the best choice, allowing you to focus on the incredible experience of walking on this wonder of the world.

🏨 Hotel Recommendations
💡 Daily Travel Tip

To see the local life at the Temple of Heaven Park, it’s best to go in the morning when the park is filled with people exercising and socializing. The Summer Palace is vast, so allocate at least half a day to explore it properly. Wear very comfortable shoes. A combination ticket at the Summer Palace is good value as it includes entry to the main sights within the park, like the Tower of Buddhist Incense. The Beijing Subway is the most efficient way to travel between these two sites, although it will require a line change. It’s a day of extensive walking, so pace yourself and take breaks to just sit and enjoy the beautiful scenery. This provides a peaceful and culturally rich end to your time in the capital.

👕 What to Wear

Today is another day of significant walking, so comfort is paramount. A pair of comfortable walking shoes is a must. The weather will dictate your specific clothing, but a casual and practical outfit of trousers or shorts and a t-shirt is perfect. Both the Temple of Heaven and the Summer Palace are vast parks, so you will be exposed to the sun. A sun hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are essential. As you are visiting a major temple complex in the morning, a respectful style of dress is a good idea. A small backpack is handy for carrying water, snacks, and your camera. The overall style is relaxed and practical, suitable for a full day of exploring two of Beijing’s most beautiful and expansive historical parks.

🍲 Where to Eat

There are limited food options within the Temple of Heaven park, so it’s best to plan for lunch after your visit. The area near the Summer Palace has a number of good restaurants. For a truly special experience, the Aman at Summer Palace hotel has several exquisite restaurants that are open to non-guests (reservations essential). For more casual options, you can find many eateries near the subway stations that serve the palace. For your final dinner in Beijing, you could revisit your favorite dish or try something new. You might want to explore the Ghost Street (Gui Jie), a famous street lined with hundreds of red lanterns and restaurants, many of which are open 24 hours and specialize in spicy hot pot. It’s a lively and delicious way to say goodbye to Beijing.

🚌 How to Go

The Beijing Subway is the best way to navigate today’s itinerary. To get to the Temple of Heaven, take Line 5 to the Tiantandongmen station, which is right at the park’s east gate. To travel from the Temple of Heaven to the Summer Palace, you will need to take the subway and make a couple of line changes. A typical route would be Line 5 to Line 1, and then Line 1 to Line 4 to Beigongmen station, which is at the north gate of the Summer Palace. The journey will take about an hour but is very straightforward using the subway map. A taxi or Didi would be more direct but will be subject to traffic. This combination of sites is a classic Beijing day trip, made easy by the city’s excellent public transport.

You will glide smoothly and quietly across the vast North China Plain at speeds of up to 350 km/h, watching the countryside and cities flash by. It’s a comfortable and incredibly efficient way to travel. Upon arrival in Xi’an, the ancient capital of 13 dynasties and the eastern terminus of the Silk Road, you’ll feel a different historical energy. After checking into your hotel, spend your first evening exploring the vibrant Muslim Quarter. This bustling area is a maze of narrow streets packed with food stalls, souvenir shops, and the Great Mosque of Xi’an. 🏨 Hotel Recommendations
💡 Daily Travel Tip

High-speed train tickets in China must be booked in advance, especially for popular routes. You can use official apps like China Railway 12306 or third-party agents, and you will need your passport. Arrive at the train station (likely Beijing West) at least an hour before departure. The stations are huge, like airports, and you will need to go through security and find your departure gate. Upon arrival at Xi’an North station, the metro is the easiest way to get to your hotel in the city centre. The Muslim Quarter is a feast for the senses, but it gets incredibly crowded in the evening. Be prepared for the crowds, and be adventurous with the food—it’s some of the most delicious street food in China.

👕 What to Wear

For your travel day on the high-speed train, comfort is the top priority. A pair of comfortable trousers or joggers and a layered top is ideal, as the train’s temperature can vary. Once you arrive in Xi’an and head to the Muslim Quarter, you are in a bustling market environment. Casual and comfortable clothes are perfect. As you will be visiting the Great Mosque, it is a sign of respect for women to have a scarf to cover their hair, and for both men and women to wear clothing that covers their shoulders and knees. Comfortable walking shoes are a must for navigating the crowded and uneven streets of the quarter. A crossbody bag that you can keep in front of you is a good idea in the dense crowds.

🍲 Where to Eat

Dinner tonight is an adventure in the Muslim Quarter. This is the heart of Xi’an’s culinary scene and a paradise for street food lovers. You must try the local specialties. Look for ‘Roujiamo,’ often called a Chinese hamburger, which is spiced meat (usually beef or lamb) stuffed into a freshly baked flatbread. Another must-try is ‘Yangrou Paomo,’ a hearty lamb soup served with crumbled flatbread. You can also find countless stalls selling grilled lamb skewers (‘chuanr’), persimmon cakes, and freshly pulled noodles. The best approach is to wander, watch what the locals are eating, and point at what looks good. It’s a loud, smoky, chaotic, and absolutely delicious experience that is a true highlight of any trip to Xi’an.

🚌 How to Go

Your journey starts by taking the subway or a taxi to Beijing West Railway Station (Beijing Xi). The high-speed train journey to Xi’an North Railway Station (Xi’an Bei) takes between 4.5 to 6 hours. Upon arrival at Xi’an North, the station is directly connected to the Xi’an Metro system. You can take Line 2 directly south to the city centre. The Bell Tower (Zhonglou) station is a central stop and is right next to the entrance of the Muslim Quarter. This is the most efficient and cost-effective way to get from the train station to the heart of the city. Once you are in the Muslim Quarter, the entire area is a pedestrianized maze of streets and is only explorable on foot.

If you want to go by public transport, you can take the tourist bus 5 (306) from the Xi’an Railway Station. Allow at least 3-4 hours to explore the museum complex thoroughly. The main hall (Pit 1) is the most spectacular, but don’t miss the other pits and the excellent museum of the bronze chariots. This is one of China’s top attractions, so be prepared for large crowds, especially during Chinese national holidays.

👕 What to Wear

For your day trip to the Terracotta Army, comfortable clothing and shoes are essential. The museum complex is vast and requires a lot of walking, both indoors and outdoors. A pair of comfortable sneakers or walking shoes is the best choice. Dress according to the season. In summer, Xi’an can be very hot, so lightweight and breathable clothing is a must. A sun hat is also important for the walk between the different buildings. In winter, it can be quite cold, so a warm jacket is necessary. The pits themselves are indoors and climate-controlled. A smart casual look is perfectly appropriate for this historic site. A small backpack is useful for carrying water and your camera to capture this once-in-a-lifetime sight.

🍲 Where to Eat

The area immediately surrounding the Terracotta Army museum has a large number of restaurants, but most are tourist-focused and can be overpriced. Your tour may include a set lunch at one of these. If you are traveling independently, you can find more authentic and better value food in the nearby town of Lintong. A popular option is to have a simple lunch near the museum and then have a big dinner back in Xi’an. After a day of ancient history, you could return to the Muslim Quarter to try some of the dishes you missed the night before, or you could explore another area of the city. Many restaurants in Xi’an specialize in dumplings, and you could try a famous ‘dumpling banquet,’ a meal that consists of many different types of beautifully crafted dumplings.

🚌 How to Go

The most convenient and recommended way to visit the Terracotta Army is by hiring a private car and guide for a half-day or full-day tour. This allows for flexibility and provides invaluable historical context. A more budget-friendly option is to join a group bus tour, which can be booked through your hotel or a local travel agent. For independent travelers, the public tourist bus No. 5 (306) departs frequently from the east square of the main Xi’an Railway Station (not the high-speed station) and goes directly to the museum. This is a very cheap and reliable option, but be aware of imitation buses. Look for the official green public buses. The journey takes about one hour.

💡 Daily Travel Tip

The best place to access the City Wall and rent bicycles is at the South Gate (Yongning Gate). It takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to cycle the entire wall at a leisurely pace. The wall is wide and flat, making for an easy ride. Go in the late afternoon to avoid the midday heat and to enjoy the beautiful light as the sun begins to set. The Big Wild Goose Pagoda is a bit outside the city wall but is easily reached by the metro. For your final visit to the Muslim Quarter, be prepared to haggle for souvenirs, but always do so with a friendly and respectful attitude. It’s a day to really enjoy the unique historical atmosphere of Xi’an before you move on.

👕 What to Wear

For a day of cycling on the City Wall, comfortable and practical clothing is key. Athletic wear or comfortable shorts or trousers and a t-shirt are ideal. The top of the wall is completely exposed, so a sun hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are absolutely essential. A light jacket might be useful as it can be windy on the wall. Comfortable, closed-toe shoes like sneakers are the best choice for cycling. In the evening, this casual attire is perfectly suitable for the bustling and informal atmosphere of the Muslim Quarter. A small backpack is useful for carrying water, your camera, and any purchases you make. Today is an active day, so dress for comfort and movement.

🍲 Where to Eat

For lunch, you could try one of the many restaurants located just inside or outside the South Gate of the City Wall. This area has a good mix of local and Western-style cafes. The area around the Big Wild Goose Pagoda also has many excellent restaurants, including some that specialize in imperial-style cuisine. Your farewell dinner is the perfect opportunity to dive back into the Muslim Quarter. This time you can be more adventurous and try things you might have missed before. Seek out the famous ‘biang biang’ noodles, known for their wide, belt-like shape and spicy sauce. Or try the delicious persimmon doughnuts and various nut cakes for dessert. The sheer variety of food on offer is staggering, making it the perfect place for a final, memorable culinary exploration in Xi’an.

🚌 How to Go

The main access point to the City Wall is the South Gate, which is easily reachable by taking the Xi’an Metro to Yongningmen Station on Line 2. To get to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, you can take Line 3 or 4 to Dayanta station. The metro system is modern, efficient, and the best way to travel between these major sights. The Bell Tower, Drum Tower, and the Muslim Quarter are all located together in the very centre of the city, easily reached by the metro at Zhonglou station on Line 2. The city is very well-connected, and using the subway is a fast and easy way to navigate your final day of sightseeing in this ancient capital.

💡 Daily Travel Tip

Direct flights from Xi’an to Guilin are the most efficient way to travel between these two cities. Book in advance for better prices. From Guilin airport, you can take an airport shuttle bus or a taxi to your hotel in the city centre. Guilin’s main attractions are quite spread out, so using taxis or Didi is the most convenient way to get around. It’s a good idea to have the names of your destinations written in Chinese to show the driver. Guilin is the main hub for booking your Li River cruise to Yangshuo for the next day. You can easily arrange this through your hotel or a local travel agency. This is your base for exploring the region’s stunning natural beauty.

👕 What to Wear

For your flight, comfortable travel clothes are best. Guilin has a humid, subtropical climate. In summer, it is hot and rainy, so lightweight, quick-drying clothing and a good raincoat or umbrella are essential. In spring and autumn, the weather is milder but can still be wet. For exploring the city and the caves, a pair of shorts or light trousers and a t-shirt are perfect. The Reed Flute Cave can be cool and damp inside, so a light jacket might be useful. Comfortable walking shoes with a good grip are a must, as the paths inside the cave can be slippery. The overall style is very casual and practical, focused on staying comfortable in the warm, humid weather while you explore.

🍲 Where to Eat

Guilin has its own unique and delicious cuisine, which is less spicy than in other parts of China and features local ingredients. A must-try local specialty is Guilin Rice Noodles (Mifen). You can find small, dedicated shops serving this dish all over the city. It’s a cheap, fast, and incredibly delicious meal. For dinner, you could try a restaurant that serves other local dishes like Beer Fish (Pijiu Yu) or Lipu Taro Looped Meat. The area around the central lakes and Zhengyang Pedestrian Street has a wide variety of restaurants catering to tourists, serving both local and Western food. It’s a great area to wander around in the evening and find a restaurant with a pleasant atmosphere for your first meal in this beautiful region.

🚌 How to Go

The journey today involves a flight from Xi’an’s Xianyang International Airport (XIY) to Guilin Liangjiang International Airport (KWL). The flight duration is approximately 2 hours. Upon arrival in Guilin, the most economical way to get to the city centre is by taking the official airport shuttle bus, which has several stops at major hotels. Taxis and Didi are also readily available for a more direct transfer. To visit the city’s attractions like Elephant Trunk Hill and the Reed Flute Cave, which are in different parts of the city, taking a taxi is the most convenient option. It is highly recommended, and you should book your tickets in advance through your hotel, especially in peak season.

For a day of cycling and rafting, comfortable, athletic-style clothing is best. A pair of shorts and a lightweight, breathable t-shirt are ideal. The sun can be strong, so a sun hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are essential. A pair of comfortable sneakers or sturdy sports sandals is the best footwear for cycling and walking around. The high-speed train from Guilin to Shanghai is a long journey, taking about 9 hours, but it’s a comfortable and scenic way to cross a large part of the country. Book your tickets well in advance. Alternatively, you can fly from Guilin (KWL) to Shanghai (SHA or PVG). Upon arrival at Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station or Airport, the metro is the most efficient way to get to your hotel. Shanghai has a very extensive and easy-to-use subway system. The best time to visit the Bund is in the evening when all the skyscrapers in Pudong are lit up in a dazzling display of light. It’s a truly unforgettable sight.

👕 What to Wear

For your long travel day, comfortable clothing is a must. A pair of joggers or comfortable trousers with a layered top will be perfect for the high-speed train. Shanghai is a very stylish and fashionable city, so you might want to change into a smart casual outfit for your first evening exploring the Bund. A pair of dark jeans or trousers with a nice top or shirt, and a stylish jacket, would be perfect. While comfort is still important, you will notice a more fashion-conscious vibe in Shanghai compared to other parts of China. Comfortable yet stylish walking shoes are a good choice, as you will want to stroll along the long waterfront promenade. It’s a city where you can enjoy dressing up a little more in the evenings.

🍲 Where to Eat

Shanghai’s dining scene is world-class and incredibly diverse. For your first night, after soaking in the views on the Bund, you have a plethora of excellent options. Many of the historic buildings on the Bund itself house some of the city’s most prestigious and expensive restaurants, offering fine dining with unbeatable views. For a more moderately priced but still excellent meal, explore the streets just behind the Bund. A must-try Shanghai specialty is ‘Xiao Long Bao’ (soup dumplings). You can find famous and delicious examples at restaurants like Din Tai Fung or Jia Jia Tang Bao. These delicate dumplings, filled with hot, savory soup and minced pork, are a true culinary delight and a perfect introduction to Shanghainese cuisine.

🚌 How to Go

The journey from Yangshuo to Shanghai begins with a road transfer to a nearby high-speed train station, most commonly Guilin West. A taxi or a pre-booked car is the best way to make this 1.5-hour journey. The bullet train from Guilin to Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station is a long but comfortable ride, taking approximately 9 hours. Upon arrival at the massive Shanghai Hongqiao station, you can seamlessly transfer to the Shanghai Metro. Lines 2 and 10 connect directly from the station and will take you to central locations like People’s Square or Nanjing Road, near the Bund. The metro is the most efficient way to navigate Shanghai. To get to the Bund, you can take the metro to East Nanjing Road station on Line 2 or 10, which is a short walk from the waterfront.

The experience of looking down on the city from over 100 floors up is truly mind-bending. 💡 Daily Travel Tip

To get the best views from the Pudong skyscrapers, try to go on a clear day. Check the weather forecast and visibility before you go. It’s best to buy your tickets for the observation decks online in advance to avoid long queues. A good time to go up is in the late afternoon, so you can see the city by day, watch the sunset, and then see the incredible transition as the city lights up at night. To get from the Bund to Pudong, you can take a short and cheap ferry ride from near the Bund, which offers great photo opportunities, or simply take the metro (Line 2) under the river. This is a day of iconic views, so make sure your camera is fully charged.

👕 What to Wear

Shanghai is a fashionable city, so a smart casual style is a great choice for today. For a day of walking along the Bund and visiting skyscrapers, a pair of stylish trousers, a skirt, or smart jeans with a nice top or shirt is perfect. Comfortable yet fashionable shoes are a must, as you will still be doing a fair amount of walking. In the evening, if you plan to visit a rooftop bar or a fine dining restaurant, you might want to opt for a slightly more dressed-up look. A chic dress or a stylish blazer can elevate your outfit. It can get windy on the open observation decks, so having a light jacket or scarf is a good idea. Today is a day to embrace the cosmopolitan energy of the city with your style.

🍲 Where to Eat

The area around the Bund and in the Pudong financial district is home to many of Shanghai’s best and most impressive restaurants. For lunch, you could find a great restaurant in one of the luxury malls in Pudong, like the IFC Mall, which has a wide range of high-quality options. For dinner, you are spoiled for choice. For a meal with an incredible view, book a table at a restaurant on a high floor of one of the Pudong towers, or choose a restaurant on the Bund that looks across at the futuristic skyline. Lost Heaven on the Bund is a very popular choice, serving delicious and unique cuisine from the Yunnan province in a beautifully decorated, atmospheric setting. Reservations are highly recommended for any of the top restaurants in this area.

🚌 How to Go

The Bund is best reached by taking the Shanghai Metro to East Nanjing Road station (Lines 2 and 10), from which it’s a short 10-minute walk. To get from the Bund over to the Pudong side, you have several options. The fastest and most efficient is to take the metro Line 2 from East Nanjing Road one stop to Lujiazui station, which is right in the heart of the skyscraper district. A more scenic and very cheap option is to take the public ferry from the Jinling East Ferry Terminal on the Bund, which gives you fantastic views on the short journey across the river. The main skyscrapers (Shanghai Tower, SWFC, Oriental Pearl) are all within a short walking distance of each other in Lujiazui.

N/A (Departure Day)

💡 Daily Travel Tip

Shanghai has two major airports, Pudong (PVG) for most international flights and Hongqiao (SHA) for mostly domestic flights. Make sure you know which one you are departing from. The Maglev train is a fantastic experience and the fastest way to get to Pudong Airport (PVG), but it only runs from the Longyang Road metro station, so you will need to get there first. A taxi or the metro are also convenient ways to get to the airport. Allow plenty of time for your airport transfer, as Shanghai’s traffic can be heavy. Arrive at the airport at least 3 hours before your international flight. Settle your hotel bill the night before for a smooth check-out, and have your passport and flight details ready.

👕 What to Wear

For your departure day, comfort is the number one priority for your long flight home. A comfortable pair of trousers, joggers, or leggings, along with a soft t-shirt and a warm hoodie or sweater, is the perfect travel outfit. Airplane cabins can be cold, so having warm layers is crucial. Wear a pair of comfortable, slip-on shoes like sneakers, which are easy to manage during security checks and will keep you comfortable throughout your journey. This practical and relaxed attire will ensure you have a comfortable and stress-free trip as you fly home, filled with the incredible memories of your grand tour of China.

🍲 Where to Eat

Enjoy a final, leisurely breakfast in Shanghai. You could visit a local cafe for one last ‘xiao long bao’ or find a bakery for some delicious pastries. It’s best to have a substantial meal in the city before you leave for the airport, as the options at Pudong Airport, while extensive, can be more expensive. Nanjing Road has many restaurants and cafes if you are doing some last-minute shopping. Having a final, relaxed meal is a much better way to end your trip than rushing at the airport. You can use up your remaining Chinese Yuan on snacks or a coffee before you pass through security.

🚌 How to Go

To get to Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG), you have several excellent options. The fastest and most exciting way is the Maglev train. You first take the metro to Longyang Road Station (Lines 2, 7, 16), and from there, the Maglev will get you to the airport in just 8 minutes. A more direct but slower option is to take the Shanghai Metro Line 2 all the way to the airport. Taxis or a Didi (ride-hailing) are also very convenient, offering a door-to-door service. The journey by car takes about an hour, depending on traffic. There are also numerous airport shuttle bus lines that run from various points in the city. Choose the option that best suits your budget, time, and location.

🧘‍♀️ General Travel Information

Yoga & Wellness Retreats

While not traditionally known for it, the wellness scene in China is growing, blending ancient Taoist and Buddhist traditions with modern practices. You can find high-end wellness retreats near scenic areas like Yangshuo and around Shanghai, often integrated into luxury hotels. These retreats focus on tai chi, qigong, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) treatments like acupuncture and acupressure, and healthy, balanced cuisine based on medicinal food principles. Many Buddhist temples and monasteries in quieter mountain regions also offer meditation retreats for those seeking a deeper spiritual immersion. While dedicated yoga-centric retreats as seen in the West are less common, the focus on mindful movement, balance, and connection with nature through practices like tai chi offers a unique and deeply restorative wellness experience rooted in China’s rich philosophical traditions.

General Packing

Packing for a multi-city trip in China requires careful planning for different climates. For Beijing and Xi’an, pack layers. Summers are hot, while winters are cold and dry. Spring and autumn are mild but can have cool evenings. For Guilin and Yangshuo’s subtropical climate, pack lightweight, quick-drying clothes, a raincoat, and an umbrella, as it can be humid and rainy year-round. For Shanghai, pack smart casual attire; it’s a fashionable city. The most essential item for any trip to China is a pair of very comfortable walking shoes. You will be on your feet constantly. Other must-haves include a universal travel adapter, a portable power bank, any personal medications (with prescriptions), and a reusable water bottle. A VPN service installed on your phone before you go is crucial for accessing Western internet services.

Shopping Information

Shopping in China is an adventure, from bustling local markets to gleaming luxury malls. In Beijing, you can find beautiful silk, pearls, and antiques at the Panjiayuan Flea Market (be prepared to bargain hard). In Xi’an, the Muslim Quarter is fantastic for unique souvenirs, spices, and dried fruits. Guilin and Yangshuo are great places to buy traditional landscape paintings, calligraphy, and handcrafted silver jewelry. Shanghai is a shopper’s paradise. The famous Nanjing Road is one of the world’s busiest shopping streets, while areas like Xintiandi and the Former French Concession offer high-end international brands and chic local designer boutiques. Don’t forget to shop for tea; China is the home of tea, and you can find exquisite varieties in specialty shops in every city. Bargaining is expected in markets but not in department stores or boutiques.
